Public Transportation

On 11/11/11, I participated to the 11 Eleven Project. We were asked to capture a part of our day using film or photography. I took a topic that every average citizen deal with everyday : public transportation.

Recently, I’ve spent some time in Paris . Sweet memories I got from there, but what I really appreciate was the public transportation. I’m sure you expected DisneylandPark or The Eiffel Tower or any other famous places in Paris. Well, in order to reach those places, I had to use public transportation. And, I use public transportation everyday. So, I can tell the difference …

My ticket to Paris

So, before stepping outside, you know exactly online which line to take, at what time departure is and how long it will take to your destination. In stations, if you know how to read, you will never get lost. And with one card called “Navigo”, you can use any kind of means of transportation: metro, tramway or bus. Also, I was surprised when people pull out without any fear, their I-phones, I-Pads, notebooks … those expensive electronic gadgets as to spend quality time during their journey. During rush hour, they have staff to regulate the flow. And for the record, one of the best ways to discover Paris is to take the tramway from a terminal to another one.

The equivalence of “metro” in Paris would be “taxi-be” in Antananarivo. And as opposed to the metro, we always come across to some little big dilemmas while using public transportation whatever if is it to go to work or to go back home. Few examples I can speak about are: no changes (always ready for the exact fees), no real bus station (creating traffic jam), no schedule (means long wait until a bus show up or long time a bus stays in a station waiting for customers) and above all, during rush hour “the law of the strongest and the fastest” (get ready to fight and run to get in a bus!). Everyone knows this latter so well that, on Facebook, they’ve created a group called: “Si vous aussi vous êtes champion du misiska bus” means “If you too are the best to sneak in a bus”. Needless to say not to pull out even your cell phone in a taxi-be, lest to be targeted of mugging …

Started November 1st , they increased the bus fees from Ar300 to Ar400. It may seems just Ar100 difference, but it represents 33,33% rise, it means people have to adjust their budget in order to add 33,33% more for their daily transport, somehow.

As for me, it doesn’t help when you struggle to get a bus every morning. Though, it is to go to work. I am not saying “public transportation in Paris is perfect” but I just ask for a less stressful mornings …  Here is a sample of what I live everyday to go work …

On a side note,  “11 Eleven Project”- The movie will have a worldwide screening this coming 11/11/12. As for Masagascar, our dear Ambassador  Lalah and I are preparing a private screening …

Madagascar Independence Day

June 25th, 2012 , I was on the road from Morondava to go back to Antananarivo. I didn’t really realize it was Independence Day’s Eve. I was still sad to leave Morondava so soon, just look at those pictures and you’ll understand why…

Image

Allée des Baobabs – Morondava

Image

Sunset – Morondava

Surpised I was when I discovered that in every single village, town, city we passed by, the streets were crowded : at Miandrivazo, we had to take another road because the main street was too much crowded, they had to cut it off for cars. We could see children holding their “arendrina” (lanterns) and having many stuff blinking on them, and the parents were looking after them.

We arrived around 00:30 AM in Antananarivo. We could see folks, mainly young people, walking all along the street, I guess to go back home. Surely they had to “walk” because of lack of buses or too much traffic jam, … or both after the fireworks. Some of them were well covered, conscious, even laughing and having fun. Some walked like zombies … sleepy maybe… And one I saw : two of his buddies had him on their shoulders because he couldn’t walk, this time I’m sure he was damn completely drunk !

June 26th, 2012 … well, I slept most the day… but when the sun went down, I went outside with my nephew, niece, cousins to hang their “arendrina” on.

Image

Image

I was a little sad I didn’t have one :( . My niece were so kind she said I could have her “magic stick”. It’s a stick with many little lights on it and blinks in a dark … And then we sang the famous song :

“Arendrina taratasy oooo ! may may may !

‘zay tsy faly tsy m’lalao aminay!”

(Paper lanterns! burn, burn burn!  Those  who are not happy don’t play with us)

Actually, one of the arendrina get burned … It was not mine, but it was sad anyway.

Image

Image

Only few people have lanterns in papers with candle inside. Nowadays, they have a plastic lanterns with a bubble light inside … I don’t like it! Those people should sing this instead then :

“Arendrina platic oooo! Lany pile, lany pile, lany pile”

(Plastic lanterns! low batteries, low batteries, low batteries)

After few firecrakers, a private little firework, many smile and laughter, everyone got back to their home.

That is how I spent my National Independence Day. I read a lots of comment saying they don’t want to celebrate the Independence Day because “Madagascar has never been independent, it’s just a disguise to hide the truth that we are still dependant, even colonized in a modern way ” or “why celebrate it? we have nothing to be proud of, just look at our situation right now …”

I don’t give a shit about all those crap! It’s not because some people f*** up that I would hate my country. Plus, it was a great occasion to spend quality time with family!

I am proud to be Malagasy. I love Madagascar, that’s why I celebrated The National Independence Day … in my way!

The Magic Stick

Gimme a smile !

It was hard to find a movie to introduce this subject! Actually, the subject itself would be perfect if we made a movie based on it…

« Every three minutes, a child is born with a cleft. Operation Smile provides free surgeries to repair cleft lip and other facial deformities for children around the globe».

On May 12th, « Operation Smile South Africa» (OSSA) passed by Madagascar to spread their smiling spirit. They were here before and came back for post surgery check up.

As all volunteers were English speakers, they needed translator in order to communicate with local people and patients. Thanks to Lovah from Carlton Hotel Madagascar, they contacted “ICE CLUB”. When our dear ICE members: Nathalie, Haïna, Ando and Rotsy heard « Operation Smile », they didn’t hesitate to take part of the adventure.

Ready !

And so, for 6 hours non stop, we received families whom a family member had surgery. They were all ages :  6 months old baby to adult person, and came from every part of Madagascar (Tamatave, Antsirabe, Majunga, … ). A family that lived in a deep far countryside, left their home at 5:30 AM to be at HJRA (Hospital) at 8… At the end, we counted more than one hundred people we talked to, get to know, and saw smiling !

“Operation smile” is on its 6th mission in Madagascar, they helped more than 1.200 Malagasy people till now. They are surgeons, dentists, doctors but also photographs, students, workers, simple person as you and me, devoting their time and money to bring hope for unfortunate people to have a better future. They thanked us a lot for our help, but we couldn’t thank them enough for the experience they allowed us to live. We had fun and helped people at the same time. And needless to say that it was priceless to see people smiling.

“Operation Smile” will be back on August 2012, and we will be there to help indeed ! :)

Amazing Great Smiling Team !

Mission Accomplished

Last Saturday, I joined the ICE Club for our ICE Movie Session. The ICE Movie Session is a monthly activity of the club which consists of watching a movie in its English version. As usual, it takes place to a member’s place. This time, we were at Biavo’s place. (Thanks to Biavo and his mum! We loved the cookies and juice!)

Ice Movie Session

Ice Movie Session

We had choices between five movies:

  • Trespass” with Nicolas Cage and Nicole Kidman
  • The Girl with Dragon Tattoo” by David Fincher, with Daniel Craig and Romm
  •  “The Big year” with Steve Martin, Owen Wilson and Jack Black
  • Mission : Impossible – Ghost Protocol” with Tom Cruise
  • And “We bought a zoo” with Matt Damon

And the choice went to “Mission : Impossible – Ghost Protocol”, may be because Tom Cruise was on it? During the movie, all the girls were “Awwww! he’s still handsome” … “Is he married already?”… “who would you prefer Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt ?”…

I’m not really fan of the series “Mission: Impossible” . There are four. In all of them, Tom Cruise played the main character Ethan Hunt  :

  1. Mission : Impossible” (1996) It is a frenchy one, with a French director Brian De Palma and some French actor as well :  Emmanuelle Béart , Jean Reno. For me, it was too much intense to be an action movie ….
  1. Mission : Impossible II” (2000) by a master of movie action : John Woo. He was behind “Broken Arrow” (1996) with John Travolta and Christian Slater, or “Face/Off” (1997) – one of my favorite movie – with John Travolta and Nicolas Cage. This one used to be my favorite!
  1. Mission : Impossible III ” (2006) by J.J. Abrams, the man behind “Super 8”, produced by the great Steven Spielberg . This third one was a great action movie as well : suspens, drama, romance …

This last one is one of the kind. The story was quite simple : a mission went wrong where a bad guy stole nuclear code launch and the team’s mission is to stop him, …  quite simple! And, of course, there are great action scenes: they dare exploded The Kremlin, some catfights … . The movie is funnier comparing with the ones before : good dialogues with great humour. And, I enjoyed all actors acting, precisely, Simon Pegg acting, the British actor, he is funny and I love his British accent!

But I think I liked this movie because of the director Brad Bird, not Tom Cruise.  Brad Bird, a twice Academy Award Winner, directed as well “The Iron Giant” (1999), “The Incredibles” (2004) – 2 Oscars, “Ratatouille” (2007) – the second Oscar. Yes! Those are all animation movies and among the best. Actually, this movie is the first length action film Brad Bird directing, and I have to say he did a nice shot ! The sens of humour, the touch of imagination (a man climbing a hotel with gloves, a man flying … ) combined with action and drama scenes gave a piece of art : enough serious to be interesting and make you laugh all along!

QUOTE

Make it rime in order to make is easier to remember

Benji Dunn: [showing a glove] Now remember: “Blue is glue!”.
Ethan Hunt: And red?
Benji Dunn: Dead.

Pressure pressure, pressure …

Brandt: 26 minutes till door knock… 25 minutes till door knock… 24 minutes till door knock…
Ethan Hunt: The countdown is not helping.

Happy ending ?

Ethan Hunt: Mission accomplished!

Yes Day !

Have you ever spend a day doing the “Yes Man !”  I think I did it for half of the day, and it was … fun!

Yes Man” (2008)  is a movie with Jim Carrey where he plays a credit analyst. He decided to change his life by following a personal development program based on a very simple idea: “say yes to everything “.

So imagine a credit analyst say “Yes” to anyone asking for a loan … before, he just accorded about 15 loan applications, for one year he accorded more than 300 loan applications…

So, last saturday, I was with some friends. They had plan to go swimming … I wanted to go but many others “reasons” make me say no …

First, I’m little bit shy …being half naked in front of people … no!

Second, I was sick the day before, I had a fever and I ate a lot of medecine in order to feel better , but I wasn’t totally recovered

And last, I had no towel, no lamba ho any, no soap (for shower after) and above all no suitbath !

Guess what ? This happened  ”let’s buy you some new suitbath! its ok for the towel, you’re gonna be in the water most of the time and you will shower home!” … and I said …YES, let’s do that ! And we bought a new suitbath, I really needed one by the way. I didn’t care about the towel because it was true, I was in the water most of the time. And finally I could get over my body complex ! you want to see me half naked?  …

Naaaaannn, I won’t put a picture !!! lol lol  - you have to convince me to go swimming for that !

I just want to say, by saying Yes, you can be positively surprise, it is an opportunity for you to live something different … So, let’s all say YES ! at least for half of a day …. :)

This is a way to declare your flame …

Carl Allen: What I have to share is huge… and I want to share it with you.

Birthday wish

Today is the birthday of one of my dearest friend. It is coutum to wish for something on his/her birthday. And it reminds me a wish that a guy made and change his life …  Mr Destiny” (1990) with James Belushi, twice Oscar Winner Michael Caine, Linda Hamilton, better known for her part “Sarah Connor” in “The Terminator” 1984, and Courteney Cox , Monica from “Friends Larry Burrows is unhappy with his life. He believes his entire life could have turned out differently if he had not missed a shot in a baseball game when was a kid. One night, he meets this mysterious man, who offering him that alternative life he always dreamed of. But as Burrows embarks on this journey of self discovery he realises that even this new life has its problems and drawbacks…

This movie was one of those old movies that made us laugh when we were kids and made us think about our own life … what if I did this or if I didn’t miss this or … you know  …. many hypothetical theories … . Well, life is what it is, don’t bother to dream of another life, yours is great !

And finally , to my MF Friend … HAPPY BIRTHDAYLALAH !!!!  Guess what ! Lalah made a wish for today and … her wish came true !!! :) (to know what it was, you have to know what MFF means!)

Must Seen Movies ?

I pass by a movie store today and there were two movie posters side by side at the door … My eyes went like this …

And I stayed like this for a little while …

Just by the cover, those movies became must seen ones for me! I didn’t see them yet then. But I knew I will like them. For sure, they will have great storyline, with great directing. And no wonder the visual effects would be terrific. But that wouldn’t be the real reason I would watch those movies … those movies were : ”Captain America : The First Avenger” 2011, and  ”Green Lantern” 2011

No, no! it’s not because they are both superheros . Can’t you see yet why ??

… how about this ?

Now you begin to understand …

And add this …

Incredible !!!! I kown !!  that’s why those movies are must seen ones!

FYI, Ryan Reynolds (“Buried” 2010, “The Proposal” 2009) was “The Sexiest Man Alive 2010″ by the Magazine People . Don’t ask me about 2011 , it’s not yet revealed! and yeah! he is damn hot!

About Chris Evans (Fantastic Four” 2005, “The Losers” 2010), I give him a two thumbs up for his extraordinary body change for his role . See for yourself …

Let’s look closer to this transformation ….

Before - After

This reminds me Tom Hanks in “Cast Away” 2000 by the talented Oscar winner  and one of my favorite Director: Robert Zemeckis (“Back to the future” series 1985-1989-1990,  ”Death Become her” 1992 with Bruce Willis – Meryl Streep, “Forrest Gump“1994, “Contact” 1997 with Jodie Foster)

He lost 40 pounds (18,14 kg) during the movie, and he was nominated for an Oscar for his performance!

Tom Hanks in "Cast Away" 2000

So, if ever you have those movies, … well, … keep them! I’ll have mine! lol lol

No …  just kidding! Let’s enjoy the movies together!

QUOTES

From “Captain America : The first Avenger

Peggy Carter: How do you feel?
Steve Rogers: Taller.

From “Green Lantern

Hal Jordan: [to his one-night stand] Sorry, I’m late. Help yourself, there’s water from the tap!

From “Cast Away

Chuck Noland: We live and we die by time. And we must not commit the sin of losing our track on time.

Food, Cook, Restaurant, …

My contribution to the “Global Voice Food Action Day” would be talking about a movie centered on food. The first movie that comes into my mind is one of the greatest productions of Disney Pixar Animation “Ratatouille” (2007). FYI, this motion picture has been nominated 4 times at the Academy Award … and won an Oscar for the “Best Animated Feature Film of the Year 2007» ….

Remy is a gifted special … rat. His world turns around food, … that’s normal !What makes him gifted is his high sens of smell and taste, what makes him special is that his gift allows him to reach another level about food : cooking. As his favorite chef : Chef Gusteau, the finest cook in France from  « Gusteau’s Restaurant », said « Anyone can cook », Remy dreams of being able to enjoy his talent and become a cook. But his family, especially his dad, has another opinion about cooking and food … Due to some events, he got separated from his family. You may call it “destiny” or “hazard” or “luck” but he found himself in the middle of Paris, in the middle of «cuisine française » …

Remy in Paris

Not only has “Ratatouille” talked about food but also showed a relationship between father and son … and many other topics. Remy has a gifted talent that his father doesn’t want to recognize: first, he’s a rat (not bird) and second, cooking is for humans (not for rats). But in real, his father fears for his son because the world might not accept him despite his gift.

We can tell the same in the real world: society we live in, has some standard that we have to follow and fit in. If not, you might be rejected! I would say “SCREW STANDARDS” Be proud of being different! Stand for who you are! Those are slaves of society, we are free in our lives!

P.S. : Don’t miss (you won’t !) the french accent from some characters in ze movie

Now, let’s go back to the main subject: FOOD … more precisely restaurant :)

As I work far, I don’t have time to go back home for lunch. And so, I get to know few restaurants around here : Antaninarenina – Antananarivo – MADAGASCAR. Unfortunately I don’t have picture , sorry! I will upload pictures later?

Everyday, those restaurants propose 4 or 5 sorts of “Plat du jour”. A “plat du jour” means : “Vary” (rice) pronounced [vari] + “Loaka” (meat and vegetables) pronounced [lôka]. The average price of “Plat du jour” is 2.500 Ar or 0.86 Eur or 1,19 US … how much is a sandwich from McDo? with the toy please?

Vary sy Loaka (from "Tour en Cuisine" Blog)

Actually, it’s not a very good thing to go to a restaurant all the time. A reason of that is money matter! The 2.500 Ar I said before is average just for the “Plat du jour”. But  when you are in the restaurant, you are tempted to order jus, dessert, and that thing that looks delicious but is damn expensive … The other reason is health matter. Well, meals in restaurant are tasteful but not always healthy: the fat, the too much spice in the sauce, the sauce itself, the ingredient that we never know to make it so delicious but not good for health …  SLURP!

Anyway, in my case, the best restaurant is home! the best food is what I cook … hum  sorry , what Mum cooks! but it’s a private and selective and secret and private restaurant. So, if you want to try, … hum … you won’t! :p

QUOTE :

Father and son talk

Be Proud, people will be there for you!

Con men

Lately, I watched  “I love you Phillip Morris”.

I Love you Phillip Morris

People already told me  how fun and tricky it was, I couldn’t wait to see it by myself. My first knowledge about it was that Jim Carrey played a gay … I finally got to watch it … and it was surprisingly awesome!!!

The movie begins with, Steven Russell (Jim Carrey) laying on an hospital bed, and the first line is :

Steven Russell: Love sure is a funny thing. Makes you happy, makes you sad, makes you do all sorts of things you never thought you’d do before. In fact, love’s the reason I’m laying here dying.”

It says a lot! Althouth, it is not just a romantic comedy, the movie is geniously bluffy, as well as the real story that it has been inspired on : Steven Russell and Phillip Morris exist for real. Their story as incredible as it is, exists as well .

Steven Jay Russell is now in jail (not for so long I guess … lol !).

Steven Jay Russell, Phillip Morris

Steven Jay Russell, Phillip Morris

Besides being gay, he has an IQ of 163 as well …  FYI ,

I.Q.

Jim Carrey
(“Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”, “The Majestic”) delivered one of his best performance, and along with him,  Ewan McGregor (“The Ghost Writer”, “The Island” ), as the cutie and sensitive boyfriend. But, I feel I have to warn you about some scenes, they are not explicitely shocking … but it is necessary to be open-minded. His maximum sentence date is to July 12, 2140. (Steven Russell: “Fucking Texas.” )

Another great movie had been inspired from life of incredible con man :

The three times Oscar Winner Director : Steven Spielberg‘s movie : “Catch me if you can “ (2002) (nominated for 2 Oscars)

Catch Me If You Can

With Leonardo DiCaprio (“Shutter Island”, “Inception“) and the twice Oscar Winner Tom Hanks (“Toys Story 3″, Charlie Wilson’s War”),  relating the life of the young, … very young Frank Abagnale Jr.

Leonardo DiCaprio - Frank Abagnale Jr.

In the 60′s, Frank Abagnale Jr. meticulously passed forged checks across 26 countries over the course of five years, beginning when he was only 16 years old. His story ended better than Steven Russell’s … instead of having a life sentence in jail, he worked for the U.S. Federal Government as consultant and lecturer, and he built his own company “Abagnale & Associates”, a financial fraud consultancy company.

There is a saying : “Necessity is mother of invention” . Steven Russell, in jail, needed to join his boyfriend, and Frank Abagnale … well, it was to reunite his family at first …  Funny how incredibly genius those men are, it is sad they are more known for their bad actions …

Quotes

From “I love you Phillip Morris”

Steven Russell  : I love you, Phillip Morris! I love you!

Phillip Morris: Enough romance. Let’s fuck!

From “Catch me if you can”

Frank Abagnale, Jr.  (Leonardo DiCaprio) : Stop chasing me!
Carl Hanratty (Tom Hanks) : I can’t stop, it’s my job.

Can it be more explicite ? … lol
