I just had a message with this title. I don’t know the details, the only things that comes to my mind is “When you can defeat your opponent, make him your ally ” lol lol !

It reminds me a movie … a part of a movie actually “She’s out of control”  1989 (“Ne touches pas ma fille” in french)

She's Out Of Control

This movie was among  the comedies I enjoy a lot. It is a simple movie, with pretty smart humor. And it is well played :

  • Tony Danza (Doug Simpson)as a father that can’t let her daughter grow up,
  • Wallace Shawn (Dr Fishbinder) as the psychiatric doctor,
  • Ami Dolenz (Katie Simpson) as a girl just discover that she is pretty, and
  • Catherine Hicks (Janet Pearson) as the step mother tying up with her step daughter.

I can’t forget the “Rolling On the Floor Laughing” (ROFL – wink to Kya Rafun) moments with my family while watching this movie. And the “nemesis becoming friend”, it was about Katie’s first boyfriend Joey, a rocker teen, not into parents at all. Dr Fishbinder advice Doug to make Joey his bestfriend … And so he did, he showed him his album collection, told him about rock shows at that time and even, let him race with his car … which ended crashed by a train!

Matthew Perry (Chandler from “Friends“) debuted in this movie as the bad boyfriend!

QUOTES  Father/Daughter moment

Doug Simpson: Now, what have we learned today?
Katie Simpson: [sighing thankfully] I learned to never, never ask my dad a question he doesn’t have the guts to answer.

Truth about Men

Katie Simpson: Dad, when I broke a date with Joey he thought I was dating another guy, he followed me here. Men are so insecure!

Another big figure of the comedy just past away. Little Thoughs for Leslie William Nielsen 1926 – 2010 (“The Naked Gun Series“).

Leslie Nielsen (1926 - 2010)

May you rest in peace … and don’t make them laugh too much in paradise!

Disappointment

Lately, I was so exicted to discover the new M. Night Shyamalan movie : “The Last Airbender” .

M. Night Shyamalan is a master in mixing science fiction with suspens. He was twice nominated for the Oscar for “The Sixth Sense” 1999 (Bruce Willis, Haley Joel Osment) as the Best Director and the Best Writting. I will always remember  my fear while watching “Signs” (2002) with Mel Gibson, my terror while watching “The Village” (2004) with Joaquin Phoenix and my shock seeing people kill themselves in “The Happening” (2008) with Mark Wahlberg. This latter had already some bad critics due to the light acting and the simple, almost stupid, script they had to play.

The Last Airbender” is completely a different kind.  Visual effect are well done, acting … let’s say so-so …  I wasn’t convinced at all, but the scenario … he completely missed it. It is a movie for kids, or worst a pop movie : no suspens, no mystery and so predictable. And what makes it more disappointed, they made the movie in order to expect a serie. So, not only we already had a bad scenario, but there were no ending…

Actually, “The Last Airbender” , is the remake of a famous series “Avatar“.

Avatar - The Last Airbender

Even, the Avatar fans though it was a disaster because in one hand, so many parts of the series were swallowed that we, simple viewers wouldn’t understand the important of the issues … or just wouldn’t understand anything. In one another hand, M. Night Shyamalan wasn’t faithful to the series. Just an example : 3 main characters (Prince Zuko, Katara, Sokka) were asiatic in the series, in the movie they became white people (Dev Patel from “Slumdog millionaire” , Nicola Peltz, Jackson Rathbone) …

Who's who

Anyway, my disappointment comes mainly from the ” M. Night Shyamalan movie” part. This is not what I expected from him. Without that part, this movie wouldn’t be that “bad” after all …

 QUOTES :

Katara: My name is Katara. And I’m the only Waterbender left in the Southern Water Tribe.

More like “I’m Pink Power Ranger”  …

Gran Gran: He will begin to change hearts, and it is in the heart that all wars are won.

Civil Wars

Yesterday, we,… some of us, Malagasy people voted for a new Constitutional Referendum for a 4th Republic, YES or NO. We don’t have yet the final result, but so far, the YES win … I’ve never been interested in politics, but in everything you do or want to do, policital power have a significant impact on your activity which makes you, involotary, involved in politics.

It just happened that yesterday also, there were a documentary about Africa on one of our national TV channel, it was about Africa’s History during the 40’s till the 70’s. How disappointed and sad I was  when I discovered that just after each fight for independancy of each country, there were civil wars. African were so proud to be independant, changed their country names, but then for what? a civil war ? Let’s say they didn’t foresee that it made many civil victims, caused famine that killed many innocents, traumatised families due to tortures and witnessing extrem violences, and the worst,  stole kids childhood with their “child soldier”. Those  so called “people’s leader”, “country lovers” praise democracy and liberty. In fact, all they care is how to maintain their power and how to steal money from their country, no matter the consequences for the population and the future generation.

CIVIL WARS

Then, I realize that all movies about Africa such as

  • Blood Diamond (Leonardo DiCaprio, Djimon Hounsou) nominated for 5 Oscars – based on Civil War in Sierra Leone (1996-1999),
  • Hotel Rwanda” (Don Cheadle) nominated for 3 oscars – based on Civil War (1990-1993) and Genocide 1994,
  • Tears of the sun” (Bruce Willis, Monica Bellucci) – based on Civil War in Nigeria (1967-1970),  … those are still far from reality.

I am ashamed. Why ask for independancy if it is to kill each others after ?

QUOTES From “Blood Diamond

Title card: There are still 200,000 child soldiers in Africa.

From “Hotel Rwanda”

Colonel Oliver: [after telling Paul the West thinks his people are dirt] They’re not going to stay, Paul. They’re not going to stop the slaughter

From “Tears of the Sun’

Father Gianni: Go with God!
Lt. A.K. Waters: God already left Africa.

Animation Movies Party

Today, they propose on FB (FaceBook) to change your profil picture into an animation hero during you loved your childhood. Most of people did so, and the result on FB was … so cute! “Alladin“, “Saint Seya” (Knights of the Zodiac), “Totally Spies“, “Bouba” (wink to my sister), “Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers” (Tic et Tac, les Rangers du risques in french), … every kind of animation movies were there : from Blockbuster, pass by Mangas, and ended by 2D mini-series. No wonder nostalgy comes along.

When I was a child, there were time I wanted to be a drawer for animation movies. I was so amazed how those people could transform their imagination into something awesome that they can share to the world. During the 90’s, the 3D technology on screen (not out screen like nowadays)  have just been released. Anastasia (1997), which is my avatar on FB now, was one of the first animation movies to use that technology.

I was so, and I’m still, so enchanted by their melody, …  then pictures and, of course, …  the chemestry between Anya and Dimitri …  Later on, I discover that animation movie was produced by 20th Century Fox, and they chose Aaliyah (Are you that somebody, We need a resolution) to perform “Journey to the past” one of the soundtrack. She also performed as a singer and as an actress in “Romeo Must Die“, do you remember “Try again“?  it hits! But still, my favorite in “Anastasia” is  “Once upon a December“.

It was obvious for me where the chemestry between Anya and Dimitri came from, when I discovered that they were played successively by Meg Ryan (“You’ve got mail” with Tom Hanks, “Kate and Leopold” with Hugh Jackman) and John Cusack (“Serendipity” with Kate Beckinsale, “Must love dogs ” with Diane Lane). I looove the way they quarrel! So romantic …

Anya and Dimitri

QUOTES : Clash!

Anastasia: What? Hey – why are you circling me? What were you, a vulture in another life?
Dimitri: I’m sorry Enya.
Anastasia: It’s Anya.

Anya 0 – Dimitri 1

Anastasia: Do you really think I’m royalty?
Dimitri: You know I do!
Anastasia: Then stop bossing me around!

Anya 1 – Dimitri 1

Dimitri: [after making a deal with Anya] May I present… Her Royal Highness, the Grand Duchess Anastasia.
Anastasia: Pooka, we are going to Paris!
Dimitri: Uh, the dog stays.
Anastasia: I’m talking about the dog goes.
Dimitri: No, the dog is not going.
Anastasia: I say he’s going.
Dimitri: I’m allergic to dogs.
Dimitri: Just leave the dog.
Anastasia: I am not leaving the dog!

Anya 2 – Dimitri 1

Dimitri: Look I think we got off on the wrong foot.
Anastasia: Well, I think we did, too. But, I appreciate your apology.
Dimitri: Who said anything about an apology? I was just saying that…
Anastasia: Please don’t talk anymore, it’s only going to upset me.
Dimitri: Fine, I’ll be quiet if you be quiet.
Anastasia: Alright, I’ll be quiet.
Dimitri: Fine.
Anastasia: Fine.
Dimitri: Fine.
Anastasia: Fine… So you think you’re gonna miss it.
Dimitri: Miss what? Your talking?
Anastasia: No! Russia.

Hum … I lost the count …

Dowager Empress Marie: You were the boy, weren’t you – the servant boy who got us out? You saved her life and mine and you restored her to me. Yet you want no reward.
Dimitri: Not anymore.
Dowager Empress Marie: Why the change of mind?
Dimitri: It was more a change of heart. I must go.

AAWWWWWW!!!!! and at the end of the movie :

Sophie: It’s a perfect ending.
Dowager Empress Marie: No. It’s a perfect beginning.

Cult movies

During my childhood, there are movies that mark us, those are some kind of lengerdary movies or references, … cult movies. For males who grew up in the 70’s, I’m sure their cult movie would be “The Godfather” … I’ve never seen it, because I was born in the 80’s. There are many movies that I consider as a “cult movie”, most of them where during the 80’s and 90’s. Here, I would just pick one of them “Cool As Ice” (1991).

Cool as Ice

I liked the guy from nowhere, original, little rebel, on his big bike mutlicolored. And there is the girl, so wise and so sweet … and they meet … it was “love at first sight”, at least for one of them, … you know, well a very predictable scenario, but anyway, it gives some punch and great humour. But it turns out that Critics didn’t agree so … They completely shouted down. And then, I was surprise to discover this movie was a remake of an older movie , you will never guess … “Rebel without a cause” (1955)

Rebel Without a Cause

This movie is a classic movie. It was the first teen movie that really showed with emotions youngs’ torments towards parents, society, school, friends and life in general at that time. It is more drama than a comedy. And the master piece is of course, the legendary actor : James Dean.(East of Eden, Giant

Back to “Cool as Ice”, the rapper Vanilla Ice, more known for his rap song “Ice Ice baby“,  might have been to much pretentious to compare himself to James Dean. Nonetheless, many teen girls dreamed of a rebel on his bike that would take her to an extraorinary journey… Isn’t it girls? I don’t think your Prince Charming would be that guy on a white horse!

QUOTES : Knock – Knock

Johnny: Hey-yo, wassup ma’am?
Grace Winslow: Can I help you?
Johnny: Yeah, I’m looking for Kat.
Grace Winslow: We don’t have a cat.
Johnny: Kathy, your daughter.

Hum … little confusion

John Van Owen: [walking away] See ya later, Dick…
Nick: [offended] It’s Nick.
John Van Owen: [turns around for a second] Oh yea, yea… NICK…

Knock Dead

Johnny: Drop that zero and get with the hero!

‘Till death do us part

Friends are precious. They are our second family. There is a saying : “show me your friends and I’ll tell who you are”. Well, here are my friends :

  •  Friends from Childhood : That’s obvious, they are my friends since we were in high school, even before … we were in a Catholic school, and my friends and I were neither the most popular, nor the anonymous ones,  just right in a middle. (as well as in studies!)
  • 4 Friends Club (from College) : Well, first drunk, first missing class without permission, first parents requested at school coz of playing cards at school, and a lots of crazy first, with crazy friends. But, we all got graduated !
  • Lotsu Team : This are friends from work! And I’m very thankful because without them, workplace would be hell, not jail! As its name shows, we smoke weeds … hahaha! nooo! but our discussion are like if we were smoking! And the name is due to an inversion …
  • M.F.F : This is a code between M.F.F. Club, don’t try to understand, only a M.F.F. knows it!

Those friendships are “till death do us part” type. If you are not in this list, it means our friendship is not yet as deep as you think. Sorry! So what do you think? Who am I?

Talking about “till death do us part”friendship type. Here is an excellent example “Mary and Max”

They are close friends depsite their differences : Age (8 – 44), Gender (little girl – Overweight man), Location (Australia – New York), Religion (hum … I don’t know – Atheist), Experiences (harrasment at school – attack by a crow) … And although all those differences, they still have a lots of points in common … It’s not a fairy tale. Still, it is a beautiful story, you may even drop some tears sometimes!

The Director and Writer Adam Elliot said that it was based on a true story. Actually it was his story : he had a pen friend from Australia for more than 20 years . And, no! It wasn’t a little a girl. He commented on his piece of Art : “Mary and Max is my new film and it has taken five years to make and cost over eight million dollars with a crew of over 120 people”. But I tell you, you did a damn good job Adam, it’s really worth it!

The cast itself show how special this animation movie is : Philip Seymour Hoffman – Oscar winner for “Capote” (Doubt, Charlie Wilson’s War), Toni Collette – Oscar nominated for “The Six Sense” (In Her Shoes, Little Miss Sunshine), Eric Bana (Hulk, The Time Traveller’s Wife). And a big two thumbs up for the soundtrack by Dale Cornelius.

QUOTES :

Max Jerry Horovitz: Do you have a favourite-sounding word? My top-five are “ointment,” “bumblebee,” “Vladivostok,” “banana,” and “testicle.”

What’s yours? hahaha

Max Jerry Horovitz: [to Mary] You are my best friend. You are my only friend.

Fact and Fiction

I have to agree that movies tend to be dramatical sometimes, almost like soap opera. They extend an event, a fact that might be not that terrible, into a dramatic giant conspiracy. They may not have great success at the Box Office or in movie Critics, but for sure, it’s annoying ! I guess that’s the purpose : make people think!  Yesterday, I watched “The Fourth kind”.

The Fouth Kind

I can’t help wondering, can it be possible? Not the way they presented it. But, is it possible that there is someone or something bigger than us? far smarter than us, studying us like if we are rats lab?  After all, there are many events that us, simple human beings can not explain…

QUOTES – Introduction :

I’m actress Milla Jovovich, and I will be portraying Dr. Abigail Tyler in The Fourth Kind. This film is a dramatization of events that occurred October 1st through the 9th of 2000, in the Northern Alaskan town of Nome. To better explain the events of this story, the director has included actual archived footage throughout the film. This footage was acquired from Nome psychologist Dr. Abigail Tyler, who has personally documented over 65 hours of video and audio materials during the time of the incidents. To better protect their privacy, we have changed the names and professions of many of the people involved. Every dramatized scene in this movie is supported by either archived audio, video or as it was related by Dr. Tyler during extensive interviews with the director. In the end, what you believe is yours to decide. Please be advised, that some of what you’re about to see is extremely disturbing.

Little expalnation :

Abbey Tyler: An encounter in the first kind, that’s when you see a UFO. The second kind is when you see evidence of it: crop circles, radiation. The third kind is when you make contact. But the fourth kind, there’s nothing more frightening than the fourth. You see, that one is when they abduct you.

This article “The real story behind “The Fourth Kind” may make you feel better, or disapoint you …

Blinded by emotions

Our emotions sometimes makes us behave … strangly. When we are in love, we do things that we never expect to do.  When some of us are sad, we are so tempted by suicide and may even go for it.  When we are exicted, we overdo everything, … which turn out to be ridiculous. When we are stressed, we tend to speak loud and be nervous most of the time. And when we hate, we always tend to think for the worst about a person. And if we talk about anger, I guess  my words would be not enough strong to describe it, I prefer to suggest you this movie :  “The Upside of Anger”

The Upside of Anger

Perturbed by her husband disapearance, Terry Ann Wolfemyer (Joan Allen) struggle hard between her new life without a husband, her new romance with Denny Davies (Kevin Costner), and her 4 headstrong daugthers (Erika Christensen, Keri Russell,  Alicia Witt and Evan Rachel Wood)…

We know Joan Allen for her bossy role in “The Bourne Supremacy”  and “The Bourne Almighty“, and she was also John Travolta’s wife in “Face off“, and was nominated three times in the Oscar . I think we don’t need to introduce anymore the twice Oscar winner Kevin Costner, for “Dances with Wolves“, in the categories Best Director and Best Pictures, not for Best Actor! But my favorite Kevin’s movie so far is “Mr Brooks“.  Among the 4 sisters, Keri Russell (August Rush, Leaves of Grass) and Evan Rachel Wood, the former ex-future soon-to-be Marylin Manson’s wife (Thirteen, Little secrets) are worth to be mentionned, the other two girls … I don’t know them that much.

QUOTES : Mother and daughters discussion

Terry Wolfmeyer (Mother): Your father is a small man. A *very* small man!
Hadley Wolfmeyer (Daughter 1): I hope you’re not referring to his genitals because that would just be gross.
Lavender “Popeye” Wolfmeyer (Daughter 2): Aww, dude, I was about to eat a string bean!

Hahaha! be careful with words when you describe someone!

… It (anger) can change you… turn you… mold you and shape you into something you’re not. The only upside to anger, then… is the person you become. Hopefully someone that wakes up one day and realizes they’re not afraid to take the journey, someone that knows that the truth is, at best, a partially told story. That anger, like growth, comes in spurts and fits, and in its wake, leaves a new chance at acceptance, and the promise of calm. …

Complicated love

Well, it’s true! relationship are never easy, never clear. You have always to re-new things,  to struggle with . When you ask a 50 years old marriage couple : how’s their life, how they make those 50 years marriage work. They will answer : “It’s a fight everyday!”. And if , in addition to that, you got wrong choosing the supposed “The One For You”, then you are totally screwed!  Fortunately, you still have divorce, which is not really the best solution!

It says that “Truth comes from children’s mouth” . Then, if you expose the real true “love” story to a child, this child would tell you the truth that you may be afraid of, or just don’t wanna hear of. I guess that was the idea behind “Definitely, Maybe” .

Definitely, Maybe

Oké! it is really a typic romantic comedie. Well, I love (sometimes) those typic romatic comedies, above all when there is a cutest guy ever (apart from Chris Evans) like Ryan Reynolds (The proposal, Just friends), and a best actress of her generation (apart from Dakota Fanning, please!) Abgail Breslin (Secret Keepers, Signs) and an Oscar winner for Constant Gardener : Rachel Weisz (My blueberry night, The Mummy) in it.  Anyway, the director and writer, Adam Brooks is already a big fan and a movie maker of those typic romantic comedies : Bridget Jones : The edge of Reason (Rennée Zellweger, Hugh Grant, Colin Firth) , French Kiss (Meg Ryan and Kevin Kline) , The Invisible cirus (Cameron Diaz, Jordana Brewster) … this latter is more dramatic actually …

Anyway, let’s move to beautiful quotes :

Maya Hayes (The daugther) : What’s a threesome?
Will Hayes (The Father) : It’s a game, that adults play sometimes… When they’re bored.
Maya Hayes (The daughter) : …Whatever.

Hahaha! I loved this one!! And here is to show you how love is so complicated :

Maya Hayes: You’re right, it is complicated, isn’t it? I mean, you’re in love with April, who used to be in love with Lucas, and then she fell in love with you, but you were in love with Summer, who was always really in love with Hampton, and now that you’re in love with April she’s in love with Kevin… and no one’s in love with you. That’s complicated.

Finally, this next quote is one of the best in the movie, Will Hayes’ fake/trial proposal (on his knee!!! but without a ring … a fake/trial proposal!)

I wanna marry you because you’re the first person I wanna look at when I wake up in the morning, and the only one I wanna kiss goodnight. Because the first time that I saw these hands, I couldn’t imagine not being able to hold them. But mainly, when you love someone as much as I love you, getting married is the only thing left to do. So, will you, um, marry me?

Cheer up !

When you feel a little low in your life, nothing is better to cheer you up than an “animation movie” (or at least a good movie) Actually, with an animation movie, your chance to be disapointed is very low and the chance for you to laugh rolling on the floor is very high.

And when I mention “animation movie”, I talk about big production animation movies such as Walt Disney/Pixar (has to be both, just Walt Disney, sometimes it’s too childish), Dreamworks, 20th Fox (that are celebrating their 75th anniversary by the way), Paramount, Colombia, …

Let’s take an exemple : “Kung Fu Panda” , just seeing the title , I thought it was one of those Manga again, I hate Mangas!  Sorry !

Kung Fu Panda

But then, I discovered that Jack Black (Year One, Shark Tale : he was Lenny, the nice shark), the double Oscar winner Dustin Hoffman (Rain Man, Hook), the Oscar winner Angelina Jolie (Salt, Changeling), Luci Liu (Charlies Angles, Kill Bill), Jackie Chan (Karaté Kid, Rush Hour), Michael Clarke Duncan (Green mile, Daredevil) and the comic Seth Rogen (Knocked up, Funny People) were among the cast.

And the soundtrack composer was the famous Hans Zimmer, he just made more than 120 music films such as in Pearl Harbor, Gladiator, The Prince of Egypt. Plus , he has been nominated 6 times for the Oscar and won an Oscar for Best Music in “The Lion King“.

And the budget to make this animation movie were about 130 million dollars. But the gross it earned was about 630 million dollars, worldwide.

And finally, this animation movie was nominated for an Oscar and won more than 12 awards.

Well, less than that, I would run to watch this animation movie. As the title said, it’s about Kung Fu and the scenes took place in China, So obviously, there were a lot of wise quotes … let’s see …

Tai Lung: You can’t defeat me! You… you’re just a big… fat… panda!
[He throws a weak punch, Po catches his hand by the finger]
Po: I’m not a big fat panda. I’m THE big fat panda.

Hum … not exactly … NEEXT : Master Shifu to Po

“Panda, we do not wash our pits in the Pool of Sacred Tears.”

Not yet … NEEXT : Po said

“There is no charge for awesomeness  …. or attractiveness”

Oké! the best for the end, I guess you know it already : Master Oogway  to Po

There is a saying: yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That is why it is called the “present.”
