Public Transportation

On 11/11/11, I participated to the 11 Eleven Project. We were asked to capture a part of our day using film or photography. I took a topic that every average citizen deal with everyday : public transportation.

Recently, I’ve spent some time in Paris . Sweet memories I got from there, but what I really appreciate was the public transportation. I’m sure you expected DisneylandPark or The Eiffel Tower or any other famous places in Paris. Well, in order to reach those places, I had to use public transportation. And, I use public transportation everyday. So, I can tell the difference …

My ticket to Paris

So, before stepping outside, you know exactly online which line to take, at what time departure is and how long it will take to your destination. In stations, if you know how to read, you will never get lost. And with one card called “Navigo”, you can use any kind of means of transportation: metro, tramway or bus. Also, I was surprised when people pull out without any fear, their I-phones, I-Pads, notebooks … those expensive electronic gadgets as to spend quality time during their journey. During rush hour, they have staff to regulate the flow. And for the record, one of the best ways to discover Paris is to take the tramway from a terminal to another one.

The equivalence of “metro” in Paris would be “taxi-be” in Antananarivo. And as opposed to the metro, we always come across to some little big dilemmas while using public transportation whatever if is it to go to work or to go back home. Few examples I can speak about are: no changes (always ready for the exact fees), no real bus station (creating traffic jam), no schedule (means long wait until a bus show up or long time a bus stays in a station waiting for customers) and above all, during rush hour “the law of the strongest and the fastest” (get ready to fight and run to get in a bus!). Everyone knows this latter so well that, on Facebook, they’ve created a group called: “Si vous aussi vous êtes champion du misiska bus” means “If you too are the best to sneak in a bus”. Needless to say not to pull out even your cell phone in a taxi-be, lest to be targeted of mugging …

Started November 1st , they increased the bus fees from Ar300 to Ar400. It may seems just Ar100 difference, but it represents 33,33% rise, it means people have to adjust their budget in order to add 33,33% more for their daily transport, somehow.

As for me, it doesn’t help when you struggle to get a bus every morning. Though, it is to go to work. I am not saying “public transportation in Paris is perfect” but I just ask for a less stressful mornings …  Here is a sample of what I live everyday to go work …

On a side note,  “11 Eleven Project”- The movie will have a worldwide screening this coming 11/11/12. As for Masagascar, our dear Ambassador  Lalah and I are preparing a private screening …

The quote that made a buzz right now is :

“4 more years!”

See you soon for the Screening !!

Mission Accomplished

Last Saturday, I joined the ICE Club for our ICE Movie Session. The ICE Movie Session is a monthly activity of the club which consists of watching a movie in its English version. As usual, it takes place to a member’s place. This time, we were at Biavo’s place. (Thanks to Biavo and his mum! We loved the cookies and juice!)

Ice Movie Session

Ice Movie Session

We had choices between five movies:

  • Trespass” with Nicolas Cage and Nicole Kidman
  • The Girl with Dragon Tattoo” by David Fincher, with Daniel Craig and Romm
  •  “The Big year” with Steve Martin, Owen Wilson and Jack Black
  • Mission : Impossible – Ghost Protocol” with Tom Cruise
  • And “We bought a zoo” with Matt Damon

And the choice went to “Mission : Impossible – Ghost Protocol”, may be because Tom Cruise was on it? During the movie, all the girls were “Awwww! he’s still handsome” … “Is he married already?”… “who would you prefer Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt ?”…

I’m not really fan of the series “Mission: Impossible” . There are four. In all of them, Tom Cruise played the main character Ethan Hunt  :

  1. Mission : Impossible” (1996) It is a frenchy one, with a French director Brian De Palma and some French actor as well :  Emmanuelle Béart , Jean Reno. For me, it was too much intense to be an action movie ….
  1. Mission : Impossible II” (2000) by a master of movie action : John Woo. He was behind “Broken Arrow” (1996) with John Travolta and Christian Slater, or “Face/Off” (1997) – one of my favorite movie – with John Travolta and Nicolas Cage. This one used to be my favorite!
  1. Mission : Impossible III ” (2006) by J.J. Abrams, the man behind “Super 8”, produced by the great Steven Spielberg . This third one was a great action movie as well : suspens, drama, romance …

This last one is one of the kind. The story was quite simple : a mission went wrong where a bad guy stole nuclear code launch and the team’s mission is to stop him, …  quite simple! And, of course, there are great action scenes: they dare exploded The Kremlin, some catfights … . The movie is funnier comparing with the ones before : good dialogues with great humour. And, I enjoyed all actors acting, precisely, Simon Pegg acting, the British actor, he is funny and I love his British accent!

But I think I liked this movie because of the director Brad Bird, not Tom Cruise.  Brad Bird, a twice Academy Award Winner, directed as well “The Iron Giant” (1999), “The Incredibles” (2004) – 2 Oscars, “Ratatouille” (2007) – the second Oscar. Yes! Those are all animation movies and among the best. Actually, this movie is the first length action film Brad Bird directing, and I have to say he did a nice shot ! The sens of humour, the touch of imagination (a man climbing a hotel with gloves, a man flying … ) combined with action and drama scenes gave a piece of art : enough serious to be interesting and make you laugh all along!

Make it rime in order to make is easier to remember

Benji Dunn: [showing a glove] Now remember: “Blue is glue!”.
Ethan Hunt: And red?
Benji Dunn: Dead.

Pressure pressure, pressure …

Brandt: 26 minutes till door knock… 25 minutes till door knock… 24 minutes till door knock…
Ethan Hunt: The countdown is not helping.

Happy ending ?

Ethan Hunt: Mission accomplished!

Yes Day !

Have you ever spend a day doing the “Yes Man !”  I think I did it for half of the day, and it was … fun!

Yes Man” (2008)  is a movie with Jim Carrey where he plays a credit analyst. He decided to change his life by following a personal development program based on a very simple idea: “say yes to everything “.

So imagine a credit analyst say “Yes” to anyone asking for a loan … before, he just accorded about 15 loan applications, for one year he accorded more than 300 loan applications…

So, last saturday, I was with some friends. They had plan to go swimming … I wanted to go but many others “reasons” make me say no …

First, I’m little bit shy …being half naked in front of people … no!

Second, I was sick the day before, I had a fever and I ate a lot of medecine in order to feel better , but I wasn’t totally recovered

And last, I had no towel, no lamba ho any, no soap (for shower after) and above all no suitbath !

Guess what ? This happened  “let’s buy you some new suitbath! its ok for the towel, you’re gonna be in the water most of the time and you will shower home!” … and I said …YES, let’s do that ! And we bought a new suitbath, I really needed one by the way. I didn’t care about the towel because it was true, I was in the water most of the time. And finally I could get over my body complex ! you want to see me half naked?  …

Naaaaannn, I won’t put a picture !!! lol lol  – you have to convince me to go swimming for that !

I just want to say, by saying Yes, you can be positively surprise, it is an opportunity for you to live something different … So, let’s all say YES ! at least for half of a day …. 🙂

Quote :

Never drink too much Red Bull …

Carl AllenYou ever had a Red Bull? Ive never had a Red Bull before, but I had a Red Bull last night – I really like Red Bull.

I wanna plaaaaay !!

Allison: The world’s a playground. You know that when you are a kid, but somewhere along the way everyone forgets it.

This is a way to declare your flame …

Carl Allen: What I have to share is huge… and I want to share it with you.

Birthday wish

Today is the birthday of one of my dearest friend. It is coutum to wish for something on his/her birthday. And it reminds me a wish that a guy made and change his life …  Mr Destiny” (1990) with James Belushi, twice Oscar Winner Michael Caine, Linda Hamilton, better known for her part “Sarah Connor” in “The Terminator” 1984, and Courteney Cox , Monica from “Friends Larry Burrows is unhappy with his life. He believes his entire life could have turned out differently if he had not missed a shot in a baseball game when was a kid. One night, he meets this mysterious man, who offering him that alternative life he always dreamed of. But as Burrows embarks on this journey of self discovery he realises that even this new life has its problems and drawbacks…

This movie was one of those old movies that made us laugh when we were kids and made us think about our own life … what if I did this or if I didn’t miss this or … you know  …. many hypothetical theories … . Well, life is what it is, don’t bother to dream of another life, yours is great !

And finally , to my MF Friend … HAPPY BIRTHDAYLALAH !!!!  Guess what ! Lalah made a wish for today and … her wish came true !!! 🙂 (to know what it was, you have to know what MFF means!)

Lalah and To

A part from all her others many activities (such as her awesome blog : Ampela Miblaogy), our Dear Lalah is the International Ambassador of the 11 Eleven Project

PS : it’s not going to war …

Larry Joseph Burrows: How about that! The desk is wired to my ass!

Jewel Jagger, Forklift operator: You wouldn’t want me to fork you to death, would you?

Larry Joseph Burrows: Thanks. Thanks for everything. The good and the bad. Boy, you sure do know how to make a point. Oh, and listen, Mike – whatever you’ve got planned for the rest of my life? It’s perfect.
Mike the Bartender at Universal Joint Bar: [toasts] Happy birthday, Larry.

Food, Cook, Restaurant, …

My contribution to the “Global Voice Food Action Day” would be talking about a movie centered on food. The first movie that comes into my mind is one of the greatest productions of Disney Pixar Animation “Ratatouille” (2007). FYI, this motion picture has been nominated 4 times at the Academy Award … and won an Oscar for the “Best Animated Feature Film of the Year 2007» ….

Remy is a gifted special … rat. His world turns around food, … that’s normal !What makes him gifted is his high sens of smell and taste, what makes him special is that his gift allows him to reach another level about food : cooking. As his favorite chef : Chef Gusteau, the finest cook in France from  « Gusteau’s Restaurant », said « Anyone can cook », Remy dreams of being able to enjoy his talent and become a cook. But his family, especially his dad, has another opinion about cooking and food … Due to some events, he got separated from his family. You may call it “destiny” or “hazard” or “luck” but he found himself in the middle of Paris, in the middle of «cuisine française » …

Remy in Paris

Not only has “Ratatouille” talked about food but also showed a relationship between father and son … and many other topics. Remy has a gifted talent that his father doesn’t want to recognize: first, he’s a rat (not bird) and second, cooking is for humans (not for rats). But in real, his father fears for his son because the world might not accept him despite his gift.

We can tell the same in the real world: society we live in, has some standard that we have to follow and fit in. If not, you might be rejected! I would say “SCREW STANDARDS” Be proud of being different! Stand for who you are! Those are slaves of society, we are free in our lives!

P.S. : Don’t miss (you won’t !) the french accent from some characters in ze movie

Now, let’s go back to the main subject: FOOD … more precisely restaurant 🙂

As I work far, I don’t have time to go back home for lunch. And so, I get to know few restaurants around here : Antaninarenina – Antananarivo – MADAGASCAR. Unfortunately I don’t have picture , sorry! I will upload pictures later?

Everyday, those restaurants propose 4 or 5 sorts of “Plat du jour”. A “plat du jour” means : “Vary” (rice) pronounced [vari] + “Loaka” (meat and vegetables) pronounced [lôka]. The average price of “Plat du jour” is 2.500 Ar or 0.86 Eur or 1,19 US … how much is a sandwich from McDo? with the toy please?

Vary sy Loaka (from "Tour en Cuisine" Blog)

Actually, it’s not a very good thing to go to a restaurant all the time. A reason of that is money matter! The 2.500 Ar I said before is average just for the “Plat du jour”. But  when you are in the restaurant, you are tempted to order jus, dessert, and that thing that looks delicious but is damn expensive … The other reason is health matter. Well, meals in restaurant are tasteful but not always healthy: the fat, the too much spice in the sauce, the sauce itself, the ingredient that we never know to make it so delicious but not good for health …  SLURP!

Anyway, in my case, the best restaurant is home! the best food is what I cook … hum  sorry , what Mum cooks! but it’s a private and selective and secret and private restaurant. So, if you want to try, … hum … you won’t! :p

Father and son talk

Django: [to Remy] Food is fuel. You get picky about what you put in the tank, your engine is gonna die. Now shut up and eat your garbage.

What food are you ?

Remy: [voice over] If you are what you eat, then I only want to eat the good stuff.

Be Proud, people will be there for you!

Anton Ego:  The world is often unkind to new talent, new creations, the new needs friends.[ …] Not everyone can become a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere …

Con men

Lately, I watched  “I love you Phillip Morris”.

I Love you Phillip Morris

People already told me  how fun and tricky it was, I couldn’t wait to see it by myself. My first knowledge about it was that Jim Carrey played a gay … I finally got to watch it … and it was surprisingly awesome!!!

The movie begins with, Steven Russell (Jim Carrey) laying on an hospital bed, and the first line is :

Steven Russell: Love sure is a funny thing. Makes you happy, makes you sad, makes you do all sorts of things you never thought you’d do before. In fact, love’s the reason I’m laying here dying.”

It says a lot! Althouth, it is not just a romantic comedy, the movie is geniously bluffy, as well as the real story that it has been inspired on : Steven Russell and Phillip Morris exist for real. Their story as incredible as it is, exists as well .

Steven Jay Russell is now in jail (not for so long I guess … lol !).

Steven Jay Russell, Phillip Morris

Steven Jay Russell, Phillip Morris

Besides being gay, he has an IQ of 163 as well …  FYI ,

Jim Carrey
(“Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”, “The Majestic”) delivered one of his best performance, and along with him,  Ewan McGregor (“The Ghost Writer”, “The Island” ), as the cutie and sensitive boyfriend. But, I feel I have to warn you about some scenes, they are not explicitely shocking … but it is necessary to be open-minded. His maximum sentence date is to July 12, 2140. (Steven Russell: “Fucking Texas.” )

Another great movie had been inspired from life of incredible con man :

The three times Oscar Winner Director : Steven Spielberg‘s movie : “Catch me if you can “ (2002) (nominated for 2 Oscars)

Catch Me If You Can

With Leonardo DiCaprio (“Shutter Island”, “Inception“) and the twice Oscar Winner Tom Hanks (“Toys Story 3″, Charlie Wilson’s War”),  relating the life of the young, … very young Frank Abagnale Jr.

Leonardo DiCaprio - Frank Abagnale Jr.

In the 60’s, Frank Abagnale Jr. meticulously passed forged checks across 26 countries over the course of five years, beginning when he was only 16 years old. His story ended better than Steven Russell’s … instead of having a life sentence in jail, he worked for the U.S. Federal Government as consultant and lecturer, and he built his own company “Abagnale & Associates”, a financial fraud consultancy company.

There is a saying : “Necessity is mother of invention” . Steven Russell, in jail, needed to join his boyfriend, and Frank Abagnale … well, it was to reunite his family at first …  Funny how incredibly genius those men are, it is sad they are more known for their bad actions …

From “I love you Phillip Morris”

Steven Russell  : I love you, Phillip Morris! I love you!

Phillip Morris: Enough romance. Let’s fuck!

From “Catch me if you can”

Frank Abagnale, Jr.  (Leonardo DiCaprio) : Stop chasing me!
Carl Hanratty (Tom Hanks) : I can’t stop, it’s my job.

Can it be more explicite ? … lol

Myspace + Facebook = Mashup‏

I just had a message with this title. I don’t know the details, the only things that comes to my mind is “When you can defeat your opponent, make him your ally ” lol lol !

It reminds me a movie … a part of a movie actually “She’s out of control”  1989 (“Ne touches pas ma fille” in french)

She's Out Of Control

This movie was among  the comedies I enjoy a lot. It is a simple movie, with pretty smart humor. And it is well played :

  • Tony Danza (Doug Simpson)as a father that can’t let her daughter grow up,
  • Wallace Shawn (Dr Fishbinder) as the psychiatric doctor,
  • Ami Dolenz (Katie Simpson) as a girl just discover that she is pretty, and
  • Catherine Hicks (Janet Pearson) as the step mother tying up with her step daughter.

I can’t forget the “Rolling On the Floor Laughing” (ROFL – wink to Kya Rafun) moments with my family while watching this movie. And the “nemesis becoming friend”, it was about Katie’s first boyfriend Joey, a rocker teen, not into parents at all. Dr Fishbinder advice Doug to make Joey his bestfriend … And so he did, he showed him his album collection, told him about rock shows at that time and even, let him race with his car … which ended crashed by a train!

Matthew Perry (Chandler from “Friends“) debuted in this movie as the bad boyfriend!

QUOTES  Father/Daughter moment

Doug Simpson: Now, what have we learned today?
Katie Simpson: [sighing thankfully] I learned to never, never ask my dad a question he doesn’t have the guts to answer.

Truth about Men

Katie Simpson: Dad, when I broke a date with Joey he thought I was dating another guy, he followed me here. Men are so insecure!

Another big figure of the comedy just past away. Little Thoughs for Leslie William Nielsen 1926 – 2010 (“The Naked Gun Series“).

Leslie Nielsen (1926 - 2010)

May you rest in peace … and don’t make them laugh too much in paradise!

Animation Movies Party

Today, they propose on FB (FaceBook) to change your profil picture into an animation hero during you loved your childhood. Most of people did so, and the result on FB was … so cute! “Alladin“, “Saint Seya” (Knights of the Zodiac), “Totally Spies“, “Bouba” (wink to my sister), “Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers” (Tic et Tac, les Rangers du risques in french), … every kind of animation movies were there : from Blockbuster, pass by Mangas, and ended by 2D mini-series. No wonder nostalgy comes along.

When I was a child, there were time I wanted to be a drawer for animation movies. I was so amazed how those people could transform their imagination into something awesome that they can share to the world. During the 90’s, the 3D technology on screen (not out screen like nowadays)  have just been released. Anastasia (1997), which is my avatar on FB now, was one of the first animation movies to use that technology.

I was so, and I’m still, so enchanted by their melody, …  then pictures and, of course, …  the chemestry between Anya and Dimitri …  Later on, I discover that animation movie was produced by 20th Century Fox, and they chose Aaliyah (Are you that somebody, We need a resolution) to perform “Journey to the past” one of the soundtrack. She also performed as a singer and as an actress in “Romeo Must Die“, do you remember “Try again“?  it hits! But still, my favorite in “Anastasia” is  “Once upon a December“.

It was obvious for me where the chemestry between Anya and Dimitri came from, when I discovered that they were played successively by Meg Ryan (“You’ve got mail” with Tom Hanks, “Kate and Leopold” with Hugh Jackman) and John Cusack (“Serendipity” with Kate Beckinsale, “Must love dogs ” with Diane Lane). I looove the way they quarrel! So romantic …

Anya and Dimitri

QUOTES : Clash!

Anastasia: What? Hey – why are you circling me? What were you, a vulture in another life?
Dimitri: I’m sorry Enya.
Anastasia: It’s Anya.

Anya 0 – Dimitri 1

Anastasia: Do you really think I’m royalty?
Dimitri: You know I do!
Anastasia: Then stop bossing me around!

Anya 1 – Dimitri 1

Dimitri: [after making a deal with Anya] May I present… Her Royal Highness, the Grand Duchess Anastasia.
Anastasia: Pooka, we are going to Paris!
Dimitri: Uh, the dog stays.
Anastasia: I’m talking about the dog goes.
Dimitri: No, the dog is not going.
Anastasia: I say he’s going.
Dimitri: I’m allergic to dogs.
Dimitri: Just leave the dog.
Anastasia: I am not leaving the dog!

Anya 2 – Dimitri 1

Dimitri: Look I think we got off on the wrong foot.
Anastasia: Well, I think we did, too. But, I appreciate your apology.
Dimitri: Who said anything about an apology? I was just saying that…
Anastasia: Please don’t talk anymore, it’s only going to upset me.
Dimitri: Fine, I’ll be quiet if you be quiet.
Anastasia: Alright, I’ll be quiet.
Dimitri: Fine.
Anastasia: Fine.
Dimitri: Fine.
Anastasia: Fine… So you think you’re gonna miss it.
Dimitri: Miss what? Your talking?
Anastasia: No! Russia.

Hum … I lost the count …

Dowager Empress Marie: You were the boy, weren’t you – the servant boy who got us out? You saved her life and mine and you restored her to me. Yet you want no reward.
Dimitri: Not anymore.
Dowager Empress Marie: Why the change of mind?
Dimitri: It was more a change of heart. I must go.

AAWWWWWW!!!!! and at the end of the movie :

Sophie: It’s a perfect ending.
Dowager Empress Marie: No. It’s a perfect beginning.

Cult movies

During my childhood, there are movies that mark us, those are some kind of lengerdary movies or references, … cult movies. For males who grew up in the 70’s, I’m sure their cult movie would be “The Godfather” … I’ve never seen it, because I was born in the 80’s. There are many movies that I consider as a “cult movie”, most of them where during the 80’s and 90’s. Here, I would just pick one of them “Cool As Ice” (1991).

Cool as Ice

I liked the guy from nowhere, original, little rebel, on his big bike mutlicolored. And there is the girl, so wise and so sweet … and they meet … it was “love at first sight”, at least for one of them, … you know, well a very predictable scenario, but anyway, it gives some punch and great humour. But it turns out that Critics didn’t agree so … They completely shouted down. And then, I was surprise to discover this movie was a remake of an older movie , you will never guess … “Rebel without a cause” (1955)

Rebel Without a Cause

This movie is a classic movie. It was the first teen movie that really showed with emotions youngs’ torments towards parents, society, school, friends and life in general at that time. It is more drama than a comedy. And the master piece is of course, the legendary actor : James Dean.(East of Eden, Giant

Back to “Cool as Ice”, the rapper Vanilla Ice, more known for his rap song “Ice Ice baby“,  might have been to much pretentious to compare himself to James Dean. Nonetheless, many teen girls dreamed of a rebel on his bike that would take her to an extraorinary journey… Isn’t it girls? I don’t think your Prince Charming would be that guy on a white horse!

QUOTES : Knock – Knock

Johnny: Hey-yo, wassup ma’am?
Grace Winslow: Can I help you?
Johnny: Yeah, I’m looking for Kat.
Grace Winslow: We don’t have a cat.
Johnny: Kathy, your daughter.

Hum … little confusion

John Van Owen: [walking away] See ya later, Dick…
Nick: [offended] It’s Nick.
John Van Owen: [turns around for a second] Oh yea, yea… NICK…

Knock Dead

Johnny: Drop that zero and get with the hero!

‘Till death do us part

Friends are precious. They are our second family. There is a saying : “show me your friends and I’ll tell who you are”. Well, here are my friends :

  •  Friends from Childhood : That’s obvious, they are my friends since we were in high school, even before … we were in a Catholic school, and my friends and I were neither the most popular, nor the anonymous ones,  just right in a middle. (as well as in studies!)
  • 4 Friends Club (from College) : Well, first drunk, first missing class without permission, first parents requested at school coz of playing cards at school, and a lots of crazy first, with crazy friends. But, we all got graduated !
  • Lotsu Team : This are friends from work! And I’m very thankful because without them, workplace would be hell, not jail! As its name shows, we smoke weeds … hahaha! nooo! but our discussion are like if we were smoking! And the name is due to an inversion …
  • M.F.F : This is a code between M.F.F. Club, don’t try to understand, only a M.F.F. knows it!

Those friendships are “till death do us part” type. If you are not in this list, it means our friendship is not yet as deep as you think. Sorry! So what do you think? Who am I?

Talking about “till death do us part”friendship type. Here is an excellent example “Mary and Max”

They are close friends depsite their differences : Age (8 – 44), Gender (little girl – Overweight man), Location (Australia – New York), Religion (hum … I don’t know – Atheist), Experiences (harrasment at school – attack by a crow) … And although all those differences, they still have a lots of points in common … It’s not a fairy tale. Still, it is a beautiful story, you may even drop some tears sometimes!

The Director and Writer Adam Elliot said that it was based on a true story. Actually it was his story : he had a pen friend from Australia for more than 20 years . And, no! It wasn’t a little a girl. He commented on his piece of Art : “Mary and Max is my new film and it has taken five years to make and cost over eight million dollars with a crew of over 120 people”. But I tell you, you did a damn good job Adam, it’s really worth it!

The cast itself show how special this animation movie is : Philip Seymour Hoffman – Oscar winner for “Capote” (Doubt, Charlie Wilson’s War), Toni Collette – Oscar nominated for “The Six Sense” (In Her Shoes, Little Miss Sunshine), Eric Bana (Hulk, The Time Traveller’s Wife). And a big two thumbs up for the soundtrack by Dale Cornelius.

Max Jerry Horovitz: Do you have a favourite-sounding word? My top-five are “ointment,” “bumblebee,” “Vladivostok,” “banana,” and “testicle.”

What’s yours? hahaha

Max Jerry Horovitz: [to Mary] You are my best friend. You are my only friend.
