Yes! Malagasy Movies can be great!

Lately, there was a buzz on social media about being ashamed to be Malagasy. I really hope it was to raise awareness of what is wrong (not the smartest way!), but not to promote hatred for your own country. In my case, definitively not ashamed! It is not because one or two people are idiots that I would question my own identity. I am proud of being Malagasy, and I am proud of (some of) my compatriots.

As I am fan of movies, I cannot but mentioned Malagasy work that makes me more proud of being Malagasy. Before, I’ve always avoided Malagasy movies to spare my eyes and time. However, I was amazingly surprised when I attend the “10th Rencontre de Film Court” (Short Film Festival of Madagascar) here in Antananarivo. Malagasy filmmakers are just talented and gifted…

Unfortunately, I could only seen the “Fiction Selection” diffusion. There were 7 movies in the competition. All of them, no exception, have high quality of directing : lights, sound, framing, … all those complicated technics that are key points in sharing stories, were handled masterly (if that word exists) by the directors. My favorite short film was “Anjara Paradisa – Her little piece of heaven” (2015), film by Ketaka Razafimisa.

Anjara Paradisa

The story is well written, daring, consistent without falling into cliché. The actors were believable in their roles. The directing is… well, I already said it earlier : masterly handled. The editing was well though: every scene is well exploited (no long pause of nothing), we can see coherence in each view that enhances the actors’ performance. My only critics would be the soundtrack which, if I am not mistaken, was not really considered. No wonder the film got three “Zebu d’Or” at the Festival : Best Fiction, Best Actress in leading role : Stéphanie Razakaritrimo, and Best Sound Effect.

Another film that I would love to watch isAdy Gasy” (2014) – The Malagasy Way, a documentary of 86 min by Lova Nantenaina. The movie tells stories about how resourcefulness Malagasy people are. It was selected in, at least, 9 international festivals. Now, the movie is playing on theater in France. Furthermore, it has its own page on IMDB … that is, for me, the indication that M. Lova Nantenaina plays in the heavy league.

Little anecdote : my sister was among the lucky people that saw the movie at its release in France. She likes it so much that she asks us to send for her entire family, shoes made of tire fabric…  I love you, Sis !

Tagline of “Ady Gasy” :

       “The Chinese make things,

         the Malagasy fix them.”

**Spoiler** on “Her little piece of heaven”

  • How was your appointment at the hairdresser ?
  • … ORGASMIC …

Must Seen Movies ?

I pass by a movie store today and there were two movie posters side by side at the door … My eyes went like this …

And I stayed like this for a little while …

Just by the cover, those movies became must seen ones for me! I didn’t see them yet then. But I knew I will like them. For sure, they will have great storyline, with great directing. And no wonder the visual effects would be terrific. But that wouldn’t be the real reason I would watch those movies … those movies were : “Captain America : The First Avenger” 2011, and  “Green Lantern” 2011

No, no! it’s not because they are both superheros . Can’t you see yet why ??

… how about this ?

Now you begin to understand …

And add this …

Incredible !!!! I kown !!  that’s why those movies are must seen ones!

FYI, Ryan Reynolds (“Buried” 2010, “The Proposal” 2009) was “The Sexiest Man Alive 2010” by the Magazine People . Don’t ask me about 2011 , it’s not yet revealed! and yeah! he is damn hot!

About Chris Evans (Fantastic Four” 2005, “The Losers” 2010), I give him a two thumbs up for his extraordinary body change for his role . See for yourself …

Let’s look closer to this transformation ….

Before - After

This reminds me Tom Hanks in “Cast Away” 2000 by the talented Oscar winner  and one of my favorite Director: Robert Zemeckis (“Back to the future” series 1985-1989-1990,  “Death Become her” 1992 with Bruce Willis – Meryl Streep, “Forrest Gump“1994, “Contact” 1997 with Jodie Foster)

He lost 40 pounds (18,14 kg) during the movie, and he was nominated for an Oscar for his performance!

Tom Hanks in "Cast Away" 2000

So, if ever you have those movies, … well, … keep them! I’ll have mine! lol lol

No …  just kidding! Let’s enjoy the movies together!

From “Captain America : The first Avenger

Peggy Carter: How do you feel?
Steve Rogers: Taller.

From “Green Lantern

Hal Jordan: [to his one-night stand] Sorry, I’m late. Help yourself, there’s water from the tap!

From “Cast Away

Chuck Noland: We live and we die by time. And we must not commit the sin of losing our track on time.

Con men

Lately, I watched  “I love you Phillip Morris”.

I Love you Phillip Morris

People already told me  how fun and tricky it was, I couldn’t wait to see it by myself. My first knowledge about it was that Jim Carrey played a gay … I finally got to watch it … and it was surprisingly awesome!!!

The movie begins with, Steven Russell (Jim Carrey) laying on an hospital bed, and the first line is :

Steven Russell: Love sure is a funny thing. Makes you happy, makes you sad, makes you do all sorts of things you never thought you’d do before. In fact, love’s the reason I’m laying here dying.”

It says a lot! Althouth, it is not just a romantic comedy, the movie is geniously bluffy, as well as the real story that it has been inspired on : Steven Russell and Phillip Morris exist for real. Their story as incredible as it is, exists as well .

Steven Jay Russell is now in jail (not for so long I guess … lol !).

Steven Jay Russell, Phillip Morris

Steven Jay Russell, Phillip Morris

Besides being gay, he has an IQ of 163 as well …  FYI ,

Jim Carrey
(“Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”, “The Majestic”) delivered one of his best performance, and along with him,  Ewan McGregor (“The Ghost Writer”, “The Island” ), as the cutie and sensitive boyfriend. But, I feel I have to warn you about some scenes, they are not explicitely shocking … but it is necessary to be open-minded. His maximum sentence date is to July 12, 2140. (Steven Russell: “Fucking Texas.” )

Another great movie had been inspired from life of incredible con man :

The three times Oscar Winner Director : Steven Spielberg‘s movie : “Catch me if you can “ (2002) (nominated for 2 Oscars)

Catch Me If You Can

With Leonardo DiCaprio (“Shutter Island”, “Inception“) and the twice Oscar Winner Tom Hanks (“Toys Story 3″, Charlie Wilson’s War”),  relating the life of the young, … very young Frank Abagnale Jr.

Leonardo DiCaprio - Frank Abagnale Jr.

In the 60’s, Frank Abagnale Jr. meticulously passed forged checks across 26 countries over the course of five years, beginning when he was only 16 years old. His story ended better than Steven Russell’s … instead of having a life sentence in jail, he worked for the U.S. Federal Government as consultant and lecturer, and he built his own company “Abagnale & Associates”, a financial fraud consultancy company.

There is a saying : “Necessity is mother of invention” . Steven Russell, in jail, needed to join his boyfriend, and Frank Abagnale … well, it was to reunite his family at first …  Funny how incredibly genius those men are, it is sad they are more known for their bad actions …

From “I love you Phillip Morris”

Steven Russell  : I love you, Phillip Morris! I love you!

Phillip Morris: Enough romance. Let’s fuck!

From “Catch me if you can”

Frank Abagnale, Jr.  (Leonardo DiCaprio) : Stop chasing me!
Carl Hanratty (Tom Hanks) : I can’t stop, it’s my job.

Can it be more explicite ? … lol

Civil Wars

Yesterday, we,… some of us, Malagasy people voted for a new Constitutional Referendum for a 4th Republic, YES or NO. We don’t have yet the final result, but so far, the YES win … I’ve never been interested in politics, but in everything you do or want to do, policital power have a significant impact on your activity which makes you, involotary, involved in politics.

It just happened that yesterday also, there were a documentary about Africa on one of our national TV channel, it was about Africa’s History during the 40’s till the 70’s. How disappointed and sad I was  when I discovered that just after each fight for independancy of each country, there were civil wars. African were so proud to be independant, changed their country names, but then for what? a civil war ? Let’s say they didn’t foresee that it made many civil victims, caused famine that killed many innocents, traumatised families due to tortures and witnessing extrem violences, and the worst,  stole kids childhood with their “child soldier”. Those  so called “people’s leader”, “country lovers” praise democracy and liberty. In fact, all they care is how to maintain their power and how to steal money from their country, no matter the consequences for the population and the future generation.

Then, I realize that all movies about Africa such as

  • Blood Diamond (Leonardo DiCaprio, Djimon Hounsou) nominated for 5 Oscars – based on Civil War in Sierra Leone (1996-1999),
  • Hotel Rwanda” (Don Cheadle) nominated for 3 oscars – based on Civil War (1990-1993) and Genocide 1994,
  • Tears of the sun” (Bruce Willis, Monica Bellucci) – based on Civil War in Nigeria (1967-1970),  … those are still far from reality.

I am ashamed. Why ask for independancy if it is to kill each others after ?

QUOTES From “Blood Diamond

Title card: There are still 200,000 child soldiers in Africa.

From “Hotel Rwanda”

Colonel Oliver: [after telling Paul the West thinks his people are dirt] They’re not going to stay, Paul. They’re not going to stop the slaughter

From “Tears of the Sun’

Father Gianni: Go with God!
Lt. A.K. Waters: God already left Africa.

Cult movies

During my childhood, there are movies that mark us, those are some kind of lengerdary movies or references, … cult movies. For males who grew up in the 70’s, I’m sure their cult movie would be “The Godfather” … I’ve never seen it, because I was born in the 80’s. There are many movies that I consider as a “cult movie”, most of them where during the 80’s and 90’s. Here, I would just pick one of them “Cool As Ice” (1991).

Cool as Ice

I liked the guy from nowhere, original, little rebel, on his big bike mutlicolored. And there is the girl, so wise and so sweet … and they meet … it was “love at first sight”, at least for one of them, … you know, well a very predictable scenario, but anyway, it gives some punch and great humour. But it turns out that Critics didn’t agree so … They completely shouted down. And then, I was surprise to discover this movie was a remake of an older movie , you will never guess … “Rebel without a cause” (1955)

Rebel Without a Cause

This movie is a classic movie. It was the first teen movie that really showed with emotions youngs’ torments towards parents, society, school, friends and life in general at that time. It is more drama than a comedy. And the master piece is of course, the legendary actor : James Dean.(East of Eden, Giant

Back to “Cool as Ice”, the rapper Vanilla Ice, more known for his rap song “Ice Ice baby“,  might have been to much pretentious to compare himself to James Dean. Nonetheless, many teen girls dreamed of a rebel on his bike that would take her to an extraorinary journey… Isn’t it girls? I don’t think your Prince Charming would be that guy on a white horse!

QUOTES : Knock – Knock

Johnny: Hey-yo, wassup ma’am?
Grace Winslow: Can I help you?
Johnny: Yeah, I’m looking for Kat.
Grace Winslow: We don’t have a cat.
Johnny: Kathy, your daughter.

Hum … little confusion

John Van Owen: [walking away] See ya later, Dick…
Nick: [offended] It’s Nick.
John Van Owen: [turns around for a second] Oh yea, yea… NICK…

Knock Dead

Johnny: Drop that zero and get with the hero!

‘Till death do us part

Friends are precious. They are our second family. There is a saying : “show me your friends and I’ll tell who you are”. Well, here are my friends :

  •  Friends from Childhood : That’s obvious, they are my friends since we were in high school, even before … we were in a Catholic school, and my friends and I were neither the most popular, nor the anonymous ones,  just right in a middle. (as well as in studies!)
  • 4 Friends Club (from College) : Well, first drunk, first missing class without permission, first parents requested at school coz of playing cards at school, and a lots of crazy first, with crazy friends. But, we all got graduated !
  • Lotsu Team : This are friends from work! And I’m very thankful because without them, workplace would be hell, not jail! As its name shows, we smoke weeds … hahaha! nooo! but our discussion are like if we were smoking! And the name is due to an inversion …
  • M.F.F : This is a code between M.F.F. Club, don’t try to understand, only a M.F.F. knows it!

Those friendships are “till death do us part” type. If you are not in this list, it means our friendship is not yet as deep as you think. Sorry! So what do you think? Who am I?

Talking about “till death do us part”friendship type. Here is an excellent example “Mary and Max”

They are close friends depsite their differences : Age (8 – 44), Gender (little girl – Overweight man), Location (Australia – New York), Religion (hum … I don’t know – Atheist), Experiences (harrasment at school – attack by a crow) … And although all those differences, they still have a lots of points in common … It’s not a fairy tale. Still, it is a beautiful story, you may even drop some tears sometimes!

The Director and Writer Adam Elliot said that it was based on a true story. Actually it was his story : he had a pen friend from Australia for more than 20 years . And, no! It wasn’t a little a girl. He commented on his piece of Art : “Mary and Max is my new film and it has taken five years to make and cost over eight million dollars with a crew of over 120 people”. But I tell you, you did a damn good job Adam, it’s really worth it!

The cast itself show how special this animation movie is : Philip Seymour Hoffman – Oscar winner for “Capote” (Doubt, Charlie Wilson’s War), Toni Collette – Oscar nominated for “The Six Sense” (In Her Shoes, Little Miss Sunshine), Eric Bana (Hulk, The Time Traveller’s Wife). And a big two thumbs up for the soundtrack by Dale Cornelius.

Max Jerry Horovitz: Do you have a favourite-sounding word? My top-five are “ointment,” “bumblebee,” “Vladivostok,” “banana,” and “testicle.”

What’s yours? hahaha

Max Jerry Horovitz: [to Mary] You are my best friend. You are my only friend.

Blinded by emotions

Our emotions sometimes makes us behave … strangly. When we are in love, we do things that we never expect to do.  When some of us are sad, we are so tempted by suicide and may even go for it.  When we are exicted, we overdo everything, … which turn out to be ridiculous. When we are stressed, we tend to speak loud and be nervous most of the time. And when we hate, we always tend to think for the worst about a person. And if we talk about anger, I guess  my words would be not enough strong to describe it, I prefer to suggest you this movie :  “The Upside of Anger”

The Upside of Anger

Perturbed by her husband disapearance, Terry Ann Wolfemyer (Joan Allen) struggle hard between her new life without a husband, her new romance with Denny Davies (Kevin Costner), and her 4 headstrong daugthers (Erika Christensen, Keri Russell,  Alicia Witt and Evan Rachel Wood)…

We know Joan Allen for her bossy role in “The Bourne Supremacy”  and “The Bourne Almighty“, and she was also John Travolta’s wife in “Face off“, and was nominated three times in the Oscar . I think we don’t need to introduce anymore the twice Oscar winner Kevin Costner, for “Dances with Wolves“, in the categories Best Director and Best Pictures, not for Best Actor! But my favorite Kevin’s movie so far is “Mr Brooks“.  Among the 4 sisters, Keri Russell (August Rush, Leaves of Grass) and Evan Rachel Wood, the former ex-future soon-to-be Marylin Manson’s wife (Thirteen, Little secrets) are worth to be mentionned, the other two girls … I don’t know them that much.

QUOTES : Mother and daughters discussion

Terry Wolfmeyer (Mother): Your father is a small man. A *very* small man!
Hadley Wolfmeyer (Daughter 1): I hope you’re not referring to his genitals because that would just be gross.
Lavender “Popeye” Wolfmeyer (Daughter 2): Aww, dude, I was about to eat a string bean!

Hahaha! be careful with words when you describe someone!

… It (anger) can change you… turn you… mold you and shape you into something you’re not. The only upside to anger, then… is the person you become. Hopefully someone that wakes up one day and realizes they’re not afraid to take the journey, someone that knows that the truth is, at best, a partially told story. That anger, like growth, comes in spurts and fits, and in its wake, leaves a new chance at acceptance, and the promise of calm. …

Bon Appetit !

Well, I would start with a cute and beautiful movie that inspired me to begin this blog : “Julie and Julia”

Julie & Julia

Starring The Magnificent Meryl Streep with 15 nominations (including this movie) and 2 Oscars winning, Amy Adams : a revelation as for me (Doubt, Enchanted) and Stanley Tucci (The Devil wears Prada, The terminal) as a lovely and so in love husband.

Among the Writers and Producers, the screenplayer and the Director is Nora Ephron. Remember that name if you are a fan of romatic movies with humour and magic, she was the origine of Meg Ryan/Tom Hanks “Sleepless in Seatle” and ” You’ve got mail” and our angel John Travolta “Michael” (not Jackson)

The Story is based on two true story : Julia Child (Mery Streep), writer of “Mastering the Art of French Cooking” the bible for home-made cook in the 60’s, and Julie Powell (Amy Adams), writer and cook amator from Julia’s book; it talks about the similitude of their lives, their love stories and of course their cooking adventure…

THE QUOTE : Paul Child to his wife Julia Child , echoed by Julie Powell to her husband Eric powell

“You are the butter to my bread, you are the breath to my life.”

While watching this movie, prepare some snack or something to eat ‘coz this movie will make you hungry. My last words, or should I say Julia Child last words are : “Bon Appetit!” (with a cute french accent)
